“Now
That You’re Special” and “Preparing for Tomorrow’s Surprises” are programs for
children after in-school traumatic events and catastrophes. Intended for
children in kindergarten through middle school, the programs aim to make school
fun again after surviving life-changing experiences and prepare them for a
future of coping. Programs include an accelerated physical education section,
guided group discussions, and various motivational speakers. The lessons are in
teamwork and bonding, safety and confidence building, and self-defense
training. It is important that these kids learn to trust each other and
gradually trust others as they grow older. Existing social systems and the
State ought to provide the resources and funding necessary for these programs,
especially if the event occurred at a public institution.
